Researchers concluded that despite terrible health habits such as high fat diet, lack of exercise, chain smoking, excessive drinking, working in coal mines, the residents of Roseto, Pennsylvania in the 1950s were very healthy and had one sixth the heart disease of the rest of the country. All the researchers concluded that the secret was that the residents all lived in a tight-knit community where everyone looked out for their neighbors and everyone had a strong sense of belonging within that community. Living in isolation is terrible for your health and mental state. Having a sense of belonging and social support dramatically improves health and wellbeing. Also, in that community, the elderly were revered and cared for by family and community members.
