The purpose of this website, my book, and the Community Education course I teach at the College of Marin, is to teach people how to live a vibrant, meaningful life through the cultivation of self-empowerment and self-efficacy. In this weekly Q&A column, I post questions from students and from people who attend my presentations along with my answers.

Here is this week’s question:

QUESTION: You have described your mindfulness meditation practice but what is the Mindful Biology meditation?

ANSWER:  The term meditation means many different things. The Mindful Biology meditation is more of a meditation on gratitude, but with mental imagery of the body.  Since gaining a full appreciation for Dr. Meecham’s Mindful Biology, I have now added a personal meditation on the intelligence and wonder of the body to my decades old daily mindfulness practice. In meditating on various spectacular physiological processes performed by the body, we begin to appreciate and feel deep gratitude for the ways in which the body maintains homeostasis, and the ways it goes to great lengths at times to keep us alive following invasion by a pathogen, injury from trauma, abuse by us, or infliction with a disease resulting from unlucky genes.
