Norman Cousins helped create the psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) Program at UCLA. He is most known for his book: Anatomy of An Illness, in which he described his personal experiences overcoming a life-threatening illness by increasing his level of happiness. “Belief Becomes Biology” is one of his notable quotes. He had read the work of Dr. William James. Professor of physiology and psychology at Harvard in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, James once said: “There is no clear dividing line between a person’s philosophy and physiology.” The fact is, you can eat the perfect diet, get the perfect amount of daily exercise and sleep, but if you suffer with anxiety and or depression, your health will suffer. Therefore, it is essential to do whatever you can to improve your level of wellbeing. I recommend increasing and deepening your relationships, finding meaning and purpose, and all the other behaviors recommended in my book and throughout my website.
